The transformation of ALMS class
benchmarks Oliver Gavin and Lucas
Luhr from young upstarts to hugely
successful veterans parallels a major
shift in sports car racing itself.
When their open-wheel ambitions
hit dead ends, both regarded sports
cars as the pragmatic alternative. But
as endurance racing morphed into
the multi-hour sprints we see today,
their skills and mindset proved
perfect for the new way of racing.
More than a decade on from
making their respective switches,
Gavin is a multiple ALMS champ and
24 Hours of Le Mans GT class winner
with Corvette Racing, while Luhr is
celebrating a third ALMS LMP1 title.
They took time out to talk to
RACER about how sports car
racing has evolved and where it
might be heading next.
