o replace an iconic car is tough enough,
but replacing an iconic car steeped in
racing heritage is even tougher.
Relishing such a challenge, the engineers
and designers involved with Chevrolet’s
seventh-gen Corvette strived to make it
the grandest of Grand Touring road cars.
The race version has to be a worthy
successor to the C6.R which, over nine
amazing seasons, won numerous GT
titles. Thankfully, the early indications
suggest the C7.R will be.
The secret, of course, is a philosophy
that encourages – make that demands –
a free exchange of knowledge between
departments and department heads so
that road car and racecar each make the
other a better, more potent machine.
Once again, we’ve worked with our
friends at Chevrolet to create a special
bonus issue of RACER celebrating its 2013
achievements, but also looking ahead to
what promises to be a thrilling 2014. So
we offer no apologies for pouncing on the
opportunity to show the C7.R in all its
studio-lit glory before it makes its race
debut in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the
inaugural round of the TUDOR United
SportsCar Championship, Jan. 25-26.
We got lucky twice over when Stevenson
Motorsports raised its roller-doors and let
us loose with the new Z/28 for a second
In Focus. As the most track-capable Camaro
ever, you might think the Continental Tire
SportsCar Challenge GS racer has everyone
beat before it’s turned a wheel in anger.
But Chevy’s engineers, realists all, prefer
to wait and let it do its talking on the track.
Same is true of Chevy in IndyCar and
NASCAR. Right now, everyone who wears
the Bowtie is thrilled that Ganassi has joined
Penske in its IndyCar lineup, and all are
eager to see if Jimmie Johnson can capture
his record-equaling seventh Sprint Cup.
Ultimately, results are what count.
That’s why this RACER also celebrates
Chevrolet’s many successes in 2013,
including Tony Kanaan’s Indy 500 victory
(ABOVE). We hope you enjoy reading about
