RETURN OF THE SNAKE
For the SRT Motorsports mechanics, if the
pattern of the race settles into long periods of
boredom only interrupted by short bursts of
frenetic activity in the form of scheduled
pitstops, that’s a good thing. It means the
Viper GTS-Rs and their drivers are behaving
themselves – which they mostly did...
Compared to January’s Rolex 24 at
Daytona, late June in northern France
doesn’t bring too many hours of
darkness – the sun sets at 10 p.m. and
rises again at 6 a.m – but for the weary
teams and drivers, it sure feels longer.
And once daylight returns, there’s still
10 more hours before the finish...
As the teams fight fatigue and try
to stay alert, knowing the unexpected
can happen at any moment, the crowds
melt away from the grandstands and
head to the bright lights of the bars and
fairground rides in the fan village. But
the constant soundtrack is the doppler
wails and rumbles of passing racecars.
