LMPC traditionally is a steppingstone
category, but in the TUDOR Championship
it will get star power of its own: ALMS P1
and P2 champs Pickett Racing and Level 5
are both set to field PC entries in 2014.

The exalted place in Le Mans lore of
Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish has
long been secure, but while 24 Hours
wins have been plentiful for the pair (nine
for Kristensen, three for McNish), neither
had a world championship. In 2013 both
men checked that off the to-do list; along
with Audi R18 e-tron quattro co-driver
Loic Duval, they bested their Audi Sport
teammates as well as rivals from Toyota’s
works team to lock up the World
Endurance Championship drivers’ title. E b r e y / L
Audi R8s were a vital part of the
formative years of the American Le Mans
Series, so it’s appropriate that the model
will also be an integral part of its successor,
the IMSA-sanctioned TUDOR United
SportsCar Championship. But this time, it’s
in GT rather than prototype form.
Despite taking victory in last January’s
Rolex 24 at Daytona, Audi struggled to
maintain a consistent presence last season
in Grand-Am Rolex GT, but that dynamic is

“In karting, I finished the World
Championship as the runner-up once.
Now I’ve won the World Champion’s title
with Audi. That’s a nice feeling,” noted
the ever-understated Kristensen.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment
since 1985,” added McNish. “Even
in karting, I battled for the World
Champion’s title – back then at Le Mans,
by the way. In Formula 1, I didn’t really
have a real chance. Now, in my third
motorsport discipline, it’s worked out.”
Lizard Motorsports will field a pair of R8s,
while fellow longtime Porsche stalwart
Paul Miller Racing will also switch to Audi,
joining Fall-Line Motorsports to account
for four full-time R8s in the GTD class.
While Audi passed on producing a
Daytona Prototype, it’s commitment to the
P1 category for Le Mans continues. A new
turbodiesel hybrid, which regenerates
solely off the front axle, has been built to
the forthcoming fuel formula regulations
and ran for the first time in late September.
