“The 2E high-wing can-am car is
our most innovative and useful
car. It was a very nice car to drive”
probably one of the first guys who was really
a development engineer,” he says. “If you’re
a capable driver and feel right away what a
car does, it speeds up your development
cycle. Plus, we did have our own test track,
so those were the real advantages for me.
It added a lot to our team.”
2F used 2E’s wing,
chassis and a 7-liter
Chevy V8. It beat
the sports car elite at
the 1967 BOAC 500
at Brands Hatch, but
was then outlawed.

Hall cites the 1966 2E (MAIN) as his favorite Chaparral.
The vast rear wing fed its aero loads directly onto the rear
suspension, but could be flattened by a driver-operated
foot pedal to reduce drag on the straights. Fast, but often
hampered by reliability niggles, it won just one Can-Am
race, courtesy of Phil Hill at Laguna Seca. Here, Hill takes
a battered 2E to seventh at the ’ 66 finale in Las Vegas.
