NASCAR’S ENDURING PIONEERS
poles as RACER went to press, earned by a
driver roster that includes 20 of NASCAR’s
50 greatest (Glen Wood included), Wood
Brothers Racing is the oldest active team
in NASCAR and one of its most successful.
The oldest active team in NASCAR…
Think about that. In a form of racing
which genuinely appreciates its heritage,
the still-evolving narrative of the Woods is
a history book in itself. However, despite
the victories, the accolades and the
rewards, it’s not always been easy.
From the start of the 1980s – the
post-David Pearson era (see sidebar, RIGHT)
– wins had been thin on the ground anyway,
but there was a period in the mid- to
late-2000s when things got particularly
bleak. Elliott Sadler won at Bristol Motor
Speedway in March, 2001 (the first since
Morgan Shepherd at Atlanta in 1993),
but far from the beginning of a Wood
Victory Lane again for another decade.
