TAKING LEXUS TO THE FRONT
of just holding off the guys behind us,
which is a big step forward!” he says. “And
we’re learning as we’re racing toward the
front that strategy becomes a lot different
to when I was involved with Prototypes –
you have to worry about where all the
other cars are on track, and all that comes
into play. But you can’t figure that out until
you’re racing toward the front.”
It’s not just the car itself that’s young
and unproven in top-level GT racing: 3GT
drivers Sage Karam, Jack Hawksworth and
Robert Alon are 22, 26 and 27 years old,
respectively, casting 57-year-old Pruett –
who began his career in karting 49 years
ago – very much in the role of team Yoda.
“I’m at the point where sharing my
knowledge and experience with them has
been very enjoyable for me,” he says.
“They’re all in their twenties. At that stage,
you have a whole life of racing ahead of
you, and it’s paramount to be involved with
great manufacturers and great sponsors,
and to listen to good advice, too.
“This is not going to be a one-year
program. Lexus is focused on the future;
it’s going to be multiple years. And it’s
exciting to see these guys involved in what
I think is an incredible program that has
good legs and is a great opportunity. I think
they’re a terrific fit for it.”
Taken all together, that’s why a result like
sixth and seventh for the two RC Fs in Detroit
is good news. On paper, it’s a mid-pack finish.
In reality, it’s helping to lay the foundation
for a much brighter, much blue-er future.
