ports car racing and Porsche legend
Hurley Haywood knew that he’d made
the right choice about Jake Eidson as
soon as he met the (now) 22-year old
from Littleton, Colo.
“One of the things I look for with kids
is what their eyes do when they speak
with older people,” says Haywood. “When
I first met Jake, his eye-to-eye contact
was direct, and I had a pretty good feeling
that this guy was going to do spectacular
In January, Eidson was duly awarded
the inaugural IMSA Hurley Haywood GT3
Cup Scholarship, which is based around a
full season competing in the IMSA Porsche
GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama.
Eidson, who has dual American and
Australian citizenship, began racing
open-wheel cars in 2011, aged 16.
Two years later, he would win the F1600
Championship Series, then finish fifth in
the UK’s prestigious Formula Ford Festival
as a Team USA Scholarship winner. In
2014, Eidson finished third in points in
the USF2000 Championship, then went
one better in ’ 15 with second overall.
His sports car breakthrough came
at Road America last year, with an
impressive one-off GT3 Cup Challenge
drive for Kelly-Moss Road and Race that
earned him two second-place finishes.
“What really appealed to me was the
parity of the cars,” recalls Eidson. “I loved
the car, the team, the series. A lot of
people recommended that I apply for the
scholarship. I’ll never forget the day I got
the call from Hurley Haywood himself
letting me know I’d won it.”
Those GT3 Cup Challenge results,
backed by his stout racing résumé and
off-track demeanor, sealed the
scholarship for Eidson. He readily admits
that without it, he may have had to sit out
some or all of the 2017 season.
“Jake’s done a great job, and I hope
he can represent the template we use to
decide the next winner,” says Haywood.
The pressure to perform for a young
drivers is always sky high, and for
scholarship winners it’s even more

2017 IMSA Hurley
Haywood GT3 Cup
