BLOODHOUND SSC UPDATE
It’s not just in racing where technology
and development never stand still.
Chevy Trucks are on a roll, with pickup
sales up 32 percent in 2015. But
never content to rest on its laurels,
Chevrolet is keeping the pedal to the
metal with significant updates for the
2016 Silverado 1500 full-size pickup
(ABOVE, the LTZ Z71 model), which
goes on sale during the fall of 2015.
“The redesigned 2016 Silverado
will build on Chevy Trucks’ legacy of
dependability,” said Sandor Piszar,
marketing director for Chevy Trucks.
“It will feature a more muscular
appearance and offer new customer-focused technologies.
“New front end designs with bold
horizontal elements, sculpted hoods and
dramatic lighting reflect the strength
and refinement that have helped make
Silverado the fastest growing full-size
pickup brand this year.”
Other ’ 16 changes include expanded
use of 8-speed automatic transmissions,
updated Chevy MyLink with support for
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and
additional safety technologies.
The redesign of the 2016 Silverado
1500 is part of an aggressive strategy
to build on Chevy Trucks’ momentum.
Since the introduction of the all-new
Silverado 1500 in the spring of 2013,
Silverado sales have grown by double
digits, on a percentage basis, each
year. Through June of this year,
Silverado sales were up 14. 6 percent.

three straight wins as RACER went to press.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ baseline
2016 aero package will be a reprise of
the reduced-downforce setup that gained
rave reviews when it was raced at
Kentucky and Darlington this season.
Featuring a 3.5in rear spoiler (down from
6in), a reduced front splitter leading edge
(0.25in, from 2in in 2015), and a narrower
radiator pan (33in, down from 38in), the
package is designed to increase overtaking
opportunities by reducing corner speeds
and increasing off-throttle time.
“This is what racecar driving’s all
about,” said Joe Gibbs Racing driver
Denny Hamlin. “And I feel like now it’s
back in the driver and crew chief’s hands
to get their car handling like it’s supposed
to, not just an arms race of who builds
the fastest cars in the shop.”
The 2016 package will be used at all
Cup venues except for the two restrictor-
plate tracks, Daytona and Talladega.

he date is set. Bloodhound SSC and its
driver, Andy Green, will attempt to smash
the existing Land Speed Record and raise
the bar to 800mph on Oct. 16, 2016.
The supersonic car, powered by a
Rolls-Royce EJ200 jet engine and a cluster
of three Nammo hybrid rockets with
combined thrust equivalent to 135,000hp,
will be aiming to beat the 763.035mph set
by Green in 1997 with the team’s previous
LSR project, Thrust SSC.
With 800mph ticked off, Bloodhound SSC
would target the 1,000mph barrier in 2017.
Venue for the record-resetting runs will be
South Africa’s Hakskeen Pan, a dry lake bed
which provides a super-smooth, 12-mile
long track for the two-way pass required
for a record to be officially recognized.
After an eight-year design and build
process, the seven-ton Bloodhound SSC
was officially revealed to the public
Sept. 24 and is set to undergo “low
speed” (250mph) system checks, using
conventional tires and disk brakes, at a UK
airfield. It then heads to South Africa, where
it will be fitted with forged titanium wheels
for a series of increasing-speed runs.

55sec, an optimum run sees the EJ200
jet engine powering the car to 300mph, at
which point the rocket cluster is ignited.
That increases acceleration to 2G and
pushes the car to a terminal velocity of
1,050mph in order to average more than
1,000mph through the measured mile.
Under LSR rules, the car then has to
repeat the run in the opposite direction
within one hour, with the average of the
two runs taken as the recorded speed.
For braking, the 44ft car carries three
separate systems – air brakes, parachute
and disks. The air brake is deployed at
800mph, with the first chute opening at
600mph and a second at 400mph.
