No tire has delivered more Indy 500 winners than Firestone.
To mark the occasion, this year’s drivers will use a special design
bearing the names of all of Firestone’s 66 past victors. Very cool!

Safety is one of the cornerstones of
the Verizon IndyCar Series, and the
current Dallara chassis was
designed with a raft of safety
upgrades already built in, including
an enhanced safety cell to protect
against debris intrusion, and the
addition of fairings to limit the
chance of one car being launched
over the wheel of another.
The Verizon IndyCar Series has
continued to mandate regular
safety upgrades to the car since it
was introduced in 2012, including
additional bodywork tethers for ’ 16.
While most of the Verizon IndyCar Series
drivers managed to squeeze in a quick
vacation at some point during the
off-season, it’s been a busy winter for the
engineers at Chevrolet and Honda.
The 2016 season will be the fifth year
of the current era of manufacturer engine
competition, meaning that once again,
both sides of the divide have spent the
past few months searching for any gains
in performance, reliability or driveability
that might translate into an advantage on
race day. But that fight gained an added
and intriguing dimension following last
year’s introduction of aero kits; a change
that gave manufacturers direct influence
over their aerodynamic performance.
Chevrolet came out on top in the aero
battle last year, but Honda has spent the
past few months working to ensure that it
evens the count this time around. First
glimpses of both manufacturers’ new
packages appeared during pre-season
testing, but nobody will really know where
they stand until they race. The wait is
exciting – and, for those involved,
nerve-wracking. “We’re looking forward to
seeing how we’ll measure up against our
competitor,” says Honda’s Steve Eriksen.
