When Helio Castroneves wins a race, he climbs a fence. It’s
what he does. So far, the Team Penske driver has been able to
pull off his party piece three times in the Indianapolis 500.

completely consume you or else you’re
going to make irrational decisions and,
bottom line, you’re going to make
mistakes. Pressure can be a positive
thing, but there’s a very fine line between
it being positive and being disruptive.
By the time you get to this point, you
know how good your racecar is. You
might be thinking, “I have a second-place
car, but I’ll try to win,” or “I have the car
to win.” It all depends on the car you have
under you. Before those final few laps, I’m
constantly evaluating what I’ve got, and
that will determine what I plan to do next.
“OK, I have a car that can win, so I’ll go to
the front and try to manage there.” Or, if I
don’t feel I’ve got a winning car, “I’ll just
sit here and let those guys fight and they
might crash, or something else might
happen, and I’ll win.” The year that Dario
[Franchitti] won, Dixon was second and
I was third, but I didn’t have the car to win
it. Sato tried to pass Dario on the last lap,
Dario got lucky, but that could have been
three cars out right there and then.
You have to take risks. You’re not going to
do anything stupid, but you’re going to be
more aggressive. Look at what happened
last year when Will Power and I clipped the
grass while trying to pass Dixon. You know,
I’m running third and I feel like I don’t have
anything else, so I have to try something
different to be able to make it...
Is there a point when you know you’ve
got it won? No, you can never really be
sure. You’re always hearing things and
wondering whether the car’s going to
break, or you’re going to get a puncture…
There’s so many ways that the end of the
(MAIN) Tony Kanaan
pushed and took the
lead at exactly the
right moment in the
2013 Indy 500.
Seconds later, with a
little over three laps
still to run, the final
caution waved and
Kanaan would cruise
to his first victory
at the Brickyard.
