The setup was perfect. Corvette’s small-block V8 – Americana at its finest –
versus Ford’s fast and furious turbos, pitted in an endurance race for the
ages on the 50th anniversary of Ford’s first overall win at Le Mans.
Defending GTE-Pro class champion Corvette Racing, the eight-time
heavyweight title holder, was expected to hold onto its belt using the tried
and true C7.R against its old rival Ford and its fleet of new-age GTs. Yet the
much-anticipated battle for American supercar glory at Le Mans failed to
materialize. What should have been 24 rounds of intense fisticuffs was
ruined by Balance of Performance changes before the first bell even rang.
