Stars and cars from Indy 500 history and racing heritage from around
the world will be celebrated at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in June.
If names like Clark, Unser, Brabham and
Watson stir memories for you, then you
should attend the SVRA Brickyard Vintage
Racing Invitational at Indianapolis Motor
Speedway, June 10-14. All will be
celebrated and honored on a day when
600 vintage racecars flood into the
Racing Capital of the World.
Special trophies will be awarded in
honor of legendary chief mechanic and
car builder A.J. Watson and three-time
Formula 1 World Champion Sir Jack
Brabham in the roadster and Brabham
racers categories respectively. Watson’s
cars won the Indy 500 six times between
1956 and ’ 64, while Brabham remains
the only F1 World Champion to win the
title in a car bearing his own name. He
also, ironically, triggered the rear-engined
revolution at IMS that ended the reign of
the roadsters. The pair passed away last
year within a week of each other at the
ages of 90 and 88, respectively.
Geoff Brabham, one-time Indy car ace
and eventual IMSA sports car legend, will
not only present the Sir Jack Brabham
Award but also take part in the Indy
Legends Charity Pro-Am race for which
33 former Indy 500 drivers have signed
up. It’s a 40-minute race on the 2.43-mile
IMS road course on Saturday, June 13,
in 1963-’ 72 vintage muscle cars, with
the professionals splitting their stints
with amateur drivers.
“We just could not come to IMS on the
50th anniversary of Jim Clark’s Indy 500
victory and not do justice to this great
champion,” said SVRA president and
CEO Tony Parella explaining the presence
of Clark’s Indy 500 cars which will be on
display throughout the four-day event.
As well as his “500” triumph, the
Scottish ace earned 25 grand prix wins
and two F1 World Championships, but he
also has an interesting connection to the
SVRA. Jimmy’s longtime companion Sally
Swart, the former Sally Stokes, is the wife
of West Coast SVRA executive Ed Swart.
Sally remarked, “I have nothing but
golden memories of Jimmy. His mastery
in the car made him a true artist. I’m so
pleased Tony and the SVRA have chosen
to honor him in this way.”
Since the last issue of RACER went to
press, another star performer and Indy
winner, Tom Sneva, has been confirmed
as Honorary Steward for the event. Sneva
was twice an Indy car champion, won the
“500” in 1983, and took three poles at
the Brickyard. One of these saw him clock
the first 200mph qualifying lap (1977),
while his ’ 84 run set the first one- and
four-lap averages of more than 210mph.
With an Unser family reunion – Bobby,
Al, Al Jr. and Robby – present at SVRA’s
Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational and
turning laps in their Indy cars, there will
be a deep pool of great talent and
amazing cars present at Indianapolis
Motor Speedway in June. So go to
SvRa.com and book your tickets to revel
in this amazing sport’s amazing history.
