FERRARI FILM, CHALLENGER’S CHASE
CHALLENGER QUEST CONTINUES
Danny Thompson still aiming to achieve the LSR dreams of his late legendary father Mickey
In September 1960, legendary speed
enthusiast, thinker and innovator Mickey
Thompson proved his Challenger,
powered by four Pontiac engines, was
capable of surpassing his aim of topping
400mph, when he clocked 406.6mph
across the Mojave Desert. Unfortunately,
a driveshaft failed before he could make
the return leg, and so the run could not
be validated. Thereafter, Mickey turned
his attention to Indy car racing.
However, Mickey’s son Danny has
made it his crusade to finally fulfill his late
father’s mission. Piloting the beautiful
Challenger 2, he made a 419mph run at
Bonneville in 2014. However, like Mickey,
Danny was stymied by mechanical issues,
and was unable to make the return leg.
Unusable salt flats prevented a further
attempt this year, but the plan is to go for
it again in 2016. For more details on the

“BATMAN” BALE TO PLAY ENZO FERRARI
Director Michael Mann taps English actor for biopic set in 1957
Perhaps best known for his roles in
American Psycho, three Batman movies,
and for his Academy Award-winning
performance as boxer Dicky Eklund in
The Fighter, Christian Bale may be about
to face his hardest role yet.
The Englishman will portray arguably
the most iconic name in the history of
motorsport, Enzo Ferrari, in a movie
directed by Michael Mann. Since Mann’s
previous work includes the all-time
classic crime thriller Heat and (more
appropriately) an excellent sports biopic,
Ali, hopes are high that this combination
of talents can take the Ferrari movie to an
audience other than merely petrolheads.
The film, which Mann has been
ruminating over for 15 years, will be set
during 1957, and shooting is due to
commence next summer.
BALE, NOT BOB

One of the ultimate piston-engined Land
Speed Record contenders, Challenger 2 needs
funds to support Danny Thompson’s mission.
THE PULL OF PORSCHE
Rennsport Reunion V, to
be held at Mazda Raceway
Laguna Seca, Sept. 25-27,
will feature not only star
Porsches – from 550s to
LMP2 Spyders – but also the
marque’s endurance stars,
such as Hurley Haywood,
Derek Bell and Brian Redman.
NEW OWNERSHIP FOR HSR
Long-time Historic Sportscar
Racing member Jim Pace has
taken over part ownership of
HSR from vintage racing
stalwart Peter McLaughlin.
Pace was once a Skip Barber
Race School instructor and
was a professional racer
before turning to historics.
Barber Vintage Motorsports
Museum at Barber Motorsports
Park, Ala., home of the world’s
largest motorcycle collection

expansion. It’s currently
144,000 sq.ft in size, but the
