FORMULA 1 SPEEDS
Next year, for the first time in Formula 1
history, the technical regulations are
being changed to give the cars more
downforce – as much as 25 percent more.
All previous regulation change has
concerned itself with reducing, or
controlling, the aerodynamic loadings on
the cars, but following an edict from F1
ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone to “sex up”
the sport’s appeal, we should see lap time
reductions in the order of four to five
seconds in 2017. Qualifying lap records
from the 3-liter V10 era of more than a
decade ago should finally be challenged.
In the table (RIGHT) are the hard
points of the tire and downforce-enhancing changes that will deliver that
lap time boost next season.

Formula 1 was told to get quicker for 2017. It will...but why?
Was speed ever the real problem, and shouldn’t the quality
of the racing itself have been top priority for any makeover?
