2016 global mazda mx- 5 cup
The announcement, made at the SEMA
Show in Las Vegas just two months after
the car was revealed, caused ripples of
excitement throughout the club racing
world. Masahiro Moro, managing executive
officer for global sales, marketing and
customer service, admits the program is a
dream come true for he and many of his
colleagues at Mazda Motor Corporation.
“We’re excited to take the elements of
sprinkled over a variety of series. Some of
that is thanks to the scholarships Mazda
provides its champions, and much is due
to the series’ excellence as a training
ground for aspiring drivers.
John Doonan, director of motorsports
for Mazda North America, says: “Since the
Mazda MX- 5 Miata first took the green
flag back in 1990, it has been the ideal
platform for both veterans and rookies.
Because the MX- 5 is inherently such a
good car to drive, it’s an ideal platform to
learn basic and advanced race craft, and
this has made the professional MX- 5 Cup
series very successful to date.”
That popularity is only going to blossom
in 2016, since the incentive is huge.

Prototype that competes in the
TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.
Kenton Koch, this year’s MX- 5 Cup
champion, says: “MX- 5 Cup was attractive
from the beginning, so to have this set in
place is even better. It makes sports car
racing more attractive; people will want
to come to the sports car ladder system
instead of going to the open-wheel side.
I’d like to see MX- 5 Cup be as competitive
as USF2000 or Pro Mazda in that regard.”

Aside from being racing enthusiasts, we’re suckers for

“it has long been our goal
to see Mazda fans around
the world competing in
success of the existing Mazda MX- 5 Cup
series and introduce them to a new global
audience,” he says. “It has long been our
goal to see Mazda fans around the world
competing in identical MX-5s, and the
launch of the 2016 MX- 5 Miata is the
perfect time to make this goal a reality.”
